The 2018 Board

We asked each of our board members to answer the following questions so you can get to know them a little better before voting.

The questions:
1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
4. Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.

(I) indicates an incumbent.

Alan Downie

1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?

I began riding with The Club when it was still the Bikery Bike Club.  I regularly ride the Club rides.  I have assisted with ride planning, organizing the Trash Pickup. I have also assisted with the Jackson Meadow event.

2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?

I feel like I can add a perspective of someone whose biking involvement has matured from the very novice rider to a more intermediate, and experienced rider. I also ride Fat, MTB, Gravel and Road bikes.  I would like to see CV assist with the expansion beyond the road riding and engaging more riders of all levels

3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?

I think there is an opportunity to add more rides- A 3rd group for Saturdays(12-14 mph) as well as more groups during the week. Also more structured ride group descriptions and rides, plus more gravel and off road opportunities

1.  How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
I have been on the board of CV from the beginning, when the board of The Bikery Cycling Club decided on the name change.

2.
Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
I enjoy being on the board and working with club members to strengthen our cycling club. Many of our club members have become active in cycling year round and have also reached out to the community to assist others in the many pleasures of riding a bicycle.

3.
Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
Chilkoot Velo has been able to donate money to various local organizations and I would like to be able to increase this capacity. By helping to organize a hopefully successful event like the new Chilkoot Velo Gran Fondo, and other fundraising possibilities, I would like to assist groups like the Stillwater Mountain Bike Team.

4.
Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.
If I am reelected I would like to have someone else on the board become president. I believe that CV will be a stronger organization if more members become involved at all levels. I have enjoyed being president, but feel it’s time for a new face in this office.

Maurice "Sonny" McKay
1.     How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
I have been a member of Chilkoot Velo since its inception and in the prior iteration as the Bikery Cycle club. I have been a ride leader on occasion and was a ride coordinator last year.

2.     Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
I find as my work is demanding less of my time, I will have more time to contribute to outside interests such as the CV club.

3.     Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
I’d like to see if we can organize a few more rides during the week or weekend afternoons as alternatives to the Saturday am and Sunday am rides. The Wednesday evening rides were a favorite of mine and seemed to have diminished last year. I’d like to bring it back. Also, as many know, my wife and I like to ride tandem. We’ve had a number of inquiries about what it’s like to ride tandem and there are a few other couples in the club that currently ride tandem. Maybe we should survey the club and see if there is a desire for tandem oriented rides, maybe with a midpoint destination such as a restaurant or brewery.

4.    Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.

I’ve been an avid cyclist all my life. My wife, Nancy, and I enjoy cycling tour vacations especially with our tandem which is a great way to share our joy of cycling together. We feel very fortunate to live in such a cycling friendly area with some of the best roads and terrain here that we’ve ridden anywhere in the world.

1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
I've been the vice president of the board since the club formed in 2007.  I handle membership renewal, managing the email and slack lists. I organized the Saturday Ride Coordinators, and helped out where I can.

2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
I enjoy working with the board to try make the club better.

3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
I want to help with setting up more rides during the week and getting more of our club membership out riding.

Tim Parker (I)
1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
I was one of the three founders of the club.

2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
To bring a sometimes alternative view in the ongoing development of a club whose activity is something I enjoy. I like the participation.

3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
Re-balance the focus of the club between racing/training and simply enjoyable riding.

4.    Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.
You will get slower!

Gina Oesterreich (I)
1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
I have been a member of the club for 5 years.  I have been a leader of the Tuesday ride for three years (since it's inception) and have been on the board for the last two years. I am currently the secretary for the board; I keep the meeting minutes, and occasionally I post them too. I am an active rider and usually ride at least two club rides a week.

2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
I love this bike club and am committed to making it the best it can be. I want to work to grow the club, increase female ridership, and promote cycling in the St. Croix River Valley.

3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
I am currently working with another member to upgrade the website. It needs to be more usable and more informative and welcoming for new members.
I will also work to add a ride or two to the regular ride calendar. I'd like to see another weekday ride and a C ride option for the Saturday ride.

4. Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.
Did you know that our club is 22% female? The most effective board is one which is a balanced representation of the population it serves. It is important to have female representation on the board, just as it is important to have members representing different riding levels. Please consider this when placing your vote.

Mike Lyner (I)
1. How long have you been involved with Chilkoot Velo and what has been your involvement?
ALMOST SINCE ITS INCEPTION/ "CONVERSION" FROM THE BIKERY. MAIN ROLE BEING THE USA CYCLING EVENT (CYCLOCROSS) PROMOTER/LICENSER/PERMITTER. I AM THE CURRENT RACE TEAM REPRESENTATIVE ON THE BOARD.

2. Why do you want to be on the CV Board?
TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION, NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM, WHILE PROMOTING CYCLING [IN ALL ITS FORMS] IN THE ST CROIX VALLEY.

3. Are there any particular changes at CV that you would want to initiate?
MAKE THE CLUB EVEN MORE COMFORTABLE FOR WOMEN AND BEGINNER CYCLISTS.

4. Tell us anything else you would like the membership to know.
WE HAVE A REALLY GOOD THING GOING HERE. I'M IN STILLWATER TO STAY, AND I WANT MY/OUR CLUB TO BE THE BEST IT CAN BE.
